Beyond the family. Beyond the service. Beyond the party. Beyond the gifts.

How do we make a child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah the life-changing, meaningful experience that we know it should be? What can families do to make this important rite of passage an introduction to life as a responsible Jew and human being? As Jews, we want our children to care about the world they live in. But the truth is — they already do. They just need a way to express how much they care. Their Bar or Bat Mitzvah is the perfect time to empower them — to allow them to begin making their voices heard.

Through B’nai Tzedek, teenagers are able to establish a tzedakah fund in their own name with a minimum donation of $1,000. The fund will be invested with other assets of the Jewish Foundation and each year the teens will donate to organizations or projects to which they feel personally connected.

Our youth philanthropists get to learn about projects that need funding and then decide how they want to distribute the money generated by their funds. By exposing teens to this outstanding learning process, they become actively involved in the business end of philanthropy and feel really good about their role in improving the world.

B’nai Tzedek teens care deeply about the world they live in — the program simply provides them with a concrete way to express their generosity and compassion. B’nai Tzedek teens choose to incorporate tzedakah into their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. By choosing to support something important to them as individuals, they make a difference in the lives of others while making their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations that much more meaningful and memorable.
